Let’s Follow Each Other on Twitter, Shall We?

April 7, 2008

After reading about it virtually on every single website on the web, a couple of weeks ago I decided to give Twitter a try. I must say that, contrary to what many people claim to, I did not get addicted to it. It is certainly a useful and interesting application for some purposes, but so far I am using it with moderation. I log a couple of times during the day to check what other people are tweeting about. Once in a while I also post replies, links or ask questions. I still don’t get some messages that people write, like: “Hello everyone, how are you doing?” or “Going to bed now, see ya.’ That being said usually there are some interesting thoughts floating around, and cool links as well. I’ve read somewhere that Twitter is a middle ground between blogs and instant messaging, and I think that the definition is not that off the mark. Read more

Personal Branding Online 101: Buy Your Own Name As A Domain Name

April 7, 2008

Today I met with a new client who consulted with me about how to build their new ecommerce business online. Interestingly due to the fact that he has a website representing his personal brand online, he is number one in the search engines here in Ireland for key words relating to his expertise. You see although he is currently in employment i.e. he is on the payroll of an organisation, he realised the value in promoting his experience and his portfolio of skills online - he is using his own name as the domain name for his current website. One of the tips I always cover in my personal branding workshops and consultations is to ensure that you purchase your own domain name - even if you have no plan to use it at this time to host your own business blog, website or career portfolio. How to Target the Right Social Media Sites

April 7, 2008

This is a guest post on targeting Social Media Sites is from Steven Snell. Steven writes about social media marketing at Traffikd. Social-Media.jpgMost bloggers recognize the incredible potential that exists with social media marketing. Many want to maximize the traffic they receive from social media, so they add a Digg button to their posts or sign up for an account at StumbleUpon. What too many bloggers overlook is that Digg and StumbleUpon are just two of the hundreds of available options, and they may not be the best fit for every blogger. In order to get the most out of social media traffic you’ll need to put some thought into choosing the social media sites that are the most appropriate for your blog and your audience. Unfortunately, none of us have the time to be an active member on more than just a few social media sites, and trying to target too many of them by adding countless buttons and widgets to your blog will only make it cluttered and ineffective. Among social media sites there is a huge variety of audiences, types of content that is popular, amount of traffic that is sent to popular links, etc. I think most of us would agree that quality traffic is more important than quantity of traffic. The quality of traffic that you receive from social media will be largely dependent upon finding the right fit for your blog. You’ve probably read that social media traffic is very low quality. From my experience, this is not always the case. Traffic from poorly-targeted social media sites will be low quality. Read more

A “Super” WordPress Theme for Affiliate Marketers

April 7, 2008

WSA-Theme Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money blogging, but with all the different monetization models and all the different theme out there today it’s more difficult than ever to find what you need. That’s why when developing the Super Affiliate WordPress Theme, I had only one group of people in mind - the blogger cum affiliate marketer. The Super Affiliate WordPress Theme is more flexible and ideal for affiliate marketers who get traffic from more than one source, especially via Google AdWords or other PPC (Pay Per Click) ads. If you’re getting free search engine traffic or social bookmarking traffic (from StumbleUpon for example) you can be more relaxed as to where that traffic ends up. In a typical blog layout, a single visitor might get to the content page, but before getting to the end of the content there are so many other links, sidebars, ads and other distractions that they can click on. This means that the ability to tunnel traffic to perform a single action (subscribe, buy, opt-in) is severely limited. Read more

Embracing the Status of Part-Time Blogger: 5 Practical Tips

April 7, 2008

I’m sure you read a lot about pro blogging and what it takes to earn a full-time income from your blog. This is a common topic among active bloggers and there are plenty of great articles that cover various aspects of the subject. With the huge amount of focus that is given to becoming a pro blogger, I think that becoming a successful and profitable part-time blogger is often overlooked. Earning a reasonable amount of money on a part-time basis is actually more desirable than most people realize.

The Benefits of Part-Time Blogging:

Stability - As a part-time blogger you can still have the stability of a secure full-time income from another job. There’s no need to quit your day job and jump in right away in order to be successful (although some have done it). As a part-time blogger you have the luxury of earning some money and building your business without the risk that would come along with going full-time right away. Less Pressure - As a part-time blogger with the stability of a full-time income, you won’t have the pressure to produce or to earn large sums of money from your blog. If you’re able to live off of your full-time income, the blog income is really just extra. If you have a down month when you don’t make as much as you would have hoped, it’s not that big of a deal. I got used so much to buy stuff with coupons that I thought it would benefit some of our Easy WordPress readers here as well. coupons As a business owner I have no problem with paying for the tools I need. After all, I do run a business and that means there are certain costs I can’t do without. But who is to say that we always have to pay full price if we can save a dollar here and there. Widgets Take a Big Leap Backwards in WordPress 2.5

April 6, 2008

WordPress 2.5 did give us some useful improvements, however I feel that the widgets became much harder to use, and I think most people would agree with me. This screen shows the way widgets used to . All you need to do is select the widget and move it across any available sidebars to arrange them, or simple drop it back into the placeholder at the bottom to remove the widget from your blog. Pretty simple to understand, fun to use. wp-sidebar-old But with WordPress 2.5 this becomes a 3-step process which is not only confusing, it’s also much harder and no fun at all. Read more
