Handle comments with Disqus

June 7, 2008

When we start off a blog, we long for comments. I still remember how I kept revisiting my first few posts several times a day, just to see if a comment arrived from some god’s soul! But as your blog begins to get popular and the comments’ section becomes more of a discussion thread, it gets difficult at times to manage the flow of information, users who comment and other relevant stuff. What experts believe today is, that threaded, portable and social commenting is the future of online discussions. But with the advent of Disqus, such problems are a matter of past. Read more

RSS Footer WordPress Plugin

June 3, 2008

I confess that I am a bit cranky when it comes to WordPress plugins. I use as few as possible (to not compromise my WP install), and I also tend to like some old school plugins that were released years ago. My plugin of choice for adding a link to my RSS feed, for instance, was the sig2feed one. I started using it early in 2006! Recently, however, more people started scraping Daily Blog Tips, so I felt that it was necessary to add not only a link back to the blog, but also a link back to the original post. This should help Google to identify my original articles more easily and quickly. When I tried to use sig2feed for this purpose, however, I found that it was not capable of (not without a good deal of PHP tweaking at least), so I decided to find a new RSS feed footer. RSS Footer is the name of the plugin created by Joost de Valk, and it gets the job done perfectly. Basically it allows you to insert any message or link on the footer of your feeds, and it also comes with a check box that you simply need to tick if you want a link back to the original article. Display Only Post Titles on Category Pages

June 2, 2008

Monday’s video post is live. On this one I explain why you should display only post title in category and archive pages (something that I started doing recently). The second part of it illustrates how WordPress users can do this change easily. The plugin that I mention on the video is the Custom Query String. If you can’t see the video player, here is a link to the YouTube page: Display Only Post Titles on Category Pages. Sponsor: Monetize your traffic! Get Your Posts To Glitter With Flickr

June 2, 2008

We bloggers love to add images to our posts as often as possible. The reason being is a common one - a picture is worth a thousand words. I hope you remember my last post, where I introduced to you some cool extensions including Picnik, which happens to be a great extension to handle images on Firefox. Talking about image hosting, Flickr is one of the most widely used web-based imaging service. Now, you may upload a lot of images at your Flickr account and get your blog posts to display them, wherever and whenever needed. I know this would have been been a dream, until this cool plugin was launched. Yes, I am talking about the Flickr plugin for wordpress. This Flickr plugin for WordPress allows you to display your Flickr photosets as albums on your WordPress blog. The template is pretty simple and intuitive and totally customizable to match the look and feel of your blog. If desired, you can also hook it up with Lightbox or similar display libraries like - Facebox, FancyZoom and Fancybox. For the user interface, this plugin adds a new Flickr icon to the WordPress editor allowing you to easily insert your Flickr photos into your blog posts with just a couple of clicks! You also have an option to either link inserted photos to your WordPress Flickr photo album or directly to your Flickr.com photo page. Read more

  • Poll: What is Your Favorite Browser?: Anyway all this browser thinking got me curious about what browser you guys use. I know that many of you will need to use more than for work purposes (cross browser testing, Internet Explorer applications, etc), but what is your favorite browser for surfing the web, blogging and similar?
  • Website Traffic Series Part 6: Using Forum Signatures: Time to analyze another traffic generation strategy: using forum signatures. At the bottom of this post you will find links to all the previous parts on the series, and stay tuned for future ones, we are going to cover literally all of them!
