Google AdSense: Coming To A Feedburner Feed Near Your Soon

May 31, 2008

Finally Google will start rolling AdSense into Feedburner feeds. I guess the integration process was not that easy, given the time it took them after the acquisition. Regardless, this is good news for all webmasters and bloggers alike. Here is what they said on their blog:
We’ve been hinting at this for awhile, but it’s finally time to spill the beans: Starting next week, we’ll be rolling out AdSense for feeds to a small group of publishers, in anticipation of a full launch to all FeedBurner and AdSense publishers “coming soon”. If you start seeing “Ads by Google” on an ad in a feed somewhere, that’d be us.
Publishers that are already part of the FAN (Feedburner Advertising Network) will keep serving CPM ads, while having AdSense ads to fill the remaining inventory. Definitely another source of income to be considered by most bloggers out there. What do you think? Read more

Funny and Smart Uses of Google AdWords

May 24, 2008

The Royal Pingdom blog create a nice compilation with funny and smart uses of Google AdSense. I had seen some of those in the past, but not all of them. The ASCI art ads are particularly interesting, and the car rental company that came up with the idea claimed that the click-through rate increased by 47%… google adwords funny Last year we had also seen John Chow sending text messages to specific bloggers using AdWords (read How To Use Site-Targeted Google AdWords for more info on that). Do you remember any other clever use of this advertising tool? Read more

AdSense Roll out Ad Review Center to All Publishers

April 24, 2008

AdSense have today rolled out their new(ish) Ad Review Center for all AdSense publishers. I’m happy about this as I was in this last batch of publishers to see it. The idea behind the Ad Review Center is that when advertisers target your specific blog you now can see that they’re targeting it and can approve or ban and ad depending on whether you want it to appear on your site or not. This gives you more control over the ads that appear on your site. Note - this is only for ads targeted to your site (ie general AdSense ads that are contextually placed on your site are not included). Also keep in mind that when you remove an ad you could be decreasing the profitability of your site as it removes the ad from the ‘auction’ that happens between Advertisers to have their ad appear on your blog. When Google AdSense Doesn’t Provide Relevant Ads On a Blog

April 21, 2008

AdSense is a wonderful way to make money from blogs for many bloggers - however it’s not always suitable. Check out this post looking at the ads that AdSense put up on a blog for women over the age of 40. Ads included (to name just a few): MEET MARRIED WOMEN! Married but looking? Meet LOCAL married women right now! OLDER BLACK WOMEN: Free to join. 1000’s of pictures of beautiful older black singles. HISPANIC WOMEN ONLINE: Find your interracial match on line. MARRIED BUT LOOKING: Discreet affairs for men and women have never been easier. Read more

  • 25 Web 2.0 Generators: Good list with 25 generators to create logos, badges, buttons, backgrounds and rounded corners.
  • Web Metrics 101: Even wondered about the meaning of hits, visits, unique visitors, bounce rate and similar? Check out this post then.
  • Podcast Interviews: Sometime ago I did two podcast interviews. One with Gobala Krishnam about StumbleUpon, and one with Mani Karthik about blogging. Be aware that my mic stinks, and my audio was terrible. I already ordered a decent one…
  • 9 Podcasting Tips: Speaking of podcasts, if you want to get started with one read this post from Performancing first.

5 Blogger Books I Would Buy Today

April 19, 2008

Recently it seems as if there have been a number of bloggers getting deals to publish books. Last week Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett announced the release of their upcoming book. A few weeks ago Andy Beal from Marketing Pilgrim also published Radically Transparent following the success of his blog. blooger books Personally, I like the idea of bloggers that I recognize publishing books. I just ordered Darren and Chris’s book and I’m confident that it will be worth the price, because I’m already familiar with them and I respect and trust their insight and opinions. As I was purchasing the book, it made me think about some other bloggers that I would like to write a book on a particular topic. Plenty of bloggers are selling informational products or giving away free ebooks, but there are a few specifics that I would like to see, and here they are: Read more

AdSense Introduce Reports for Link Units

April 15, 2008

I just logged into my AdSense account to check my nightly stats and found a new reporting option in the ‘Advance Reports’ section (pictured below). Now you can choose to view ‘Ad Units’ or ‘Link Units’ or ‘Both’. Ad Units are all of your normal ad units (text ads, image ads, video ads) and ‘Link Units’ are those little adlink unit ads that many bloggers use around their navigational areas that take readers to a second page of ads. it’s good to see these stats as they were previously all mixed into one in the advance reports unless you’d set them up in channels. Have AdSense Sliding/Scrolling Text Ads Changed Your eCPM?

April 9, 2008

Just under a week ago AdSense rolled out their new Sliding/Scrolling feature on Text Ads. The response from ProBlogger readers was mixed to say the least and included: “They’re interesting. I like that the arrows are pretty small, yet visible to those who are paying attention to the ads.” Stephanie “What a waste - do they really think that people looking at Adsense will take the time find a couple of tiny arrows to look at more ads?” - Blogthority “I’m not a big fan of bells and whistles, so it annoys me a little bit to see more moving parts on a website. On the other hand, if it offers more-relevant ads and gets more clicking for the bloggers, then I’m all for it!” - Jeff Read more

Are You On A Shared Host?

April 9, 2008

The whole time of being online with my Freelance Writing blog (which nears one year next month by the way), I have been on a shared hosting account. Little did I know that this could potentially get me into some deep trouble. hosting For starters, did you know that being on a shared host could get your Adsense account banned? Yes, it’s true. A friend of mine shared his hosting account with a spammer and got shut down by Google. No remorse. They simply don’t care. How would you feel if that happened to you? What if the main portion of your income relied on Adsense. This is a heavy pill to swallow and certainly not what I would want to happen to me either. Read more
