Why Advertise?

May 26, 2008

For the last few years the Internet has become a large market for companies. Some of the biggest companies today have grown by taking advantage of advertising through the Internet.

Interesting post about how advertising is on the way out. People are finding new ways to disable, ignore, or avoid advertising. The future of advertising is in content/blogs/etc

Funny and Smart Uses of Google AdWords

May 24, 2008

The Royal Pingdom blog create a nice compilation with funny and smart uses of Google AdSense. I had seen some of those in the past, but not all of them. The ASCI art ads are particularly interesting, and the car rental company that came up with the idea claimed that the click-through rate increased by 47%… google adwords funny Last year we had also seen John Chow sending text messages to specific bloggers using AdWords (read How To Use Site-Targeted Google AdWords for more info on that). Do you remember any other clever use of this advertising tool? Read more

TiECON/Chitika Blogpreneur Contest 2008

May 6, 2008

Chitika, the advertising network, has partnered with the TiECON conference to create a contest for bloggers, called Blogpreneur Contest 2008. Basically they want success stories from bloggers and web entrepreneurs. Here is how to participate:
  • Publish a blog post on your blog highlighting the key factors of your success in free form (no particular structure)
  • Include the contest badge (see below) within your post so we can recognize your post an an entry
  • Email your blog post link to: Blogpreneur(at)chitika.com so we can make sure your post is counted
The 3 winners, selected by a panel of experts, will get featured at the TiECON conference, exposure on their websites and will also win badges and a plaque (I think they could have put some more salt in the prizes, but anyway). The contest starts in April 24 and ends in May 8. Read more

Chitika Roll Out CPM Filler Ads for Unsupported Countries

April 30, 2008

Chitika have been rolling out their new CPM ads over the last few days. These impression based ads will appear mainly on sites with a lot of traffic from non supported countries (they only serve their own ads to traffic from USA, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, UK). In a sense these CPM ads are ‘alternative ads’ - so if a reader comes from Japan for instance they see the new CPM ad instead of a default ad or a Public Service Announcement. The theory is that at least you’ll earn something from the ad. I can understand why Chitika are doing this and why it’d be attractive to many publishers. Most sites get at least some decent traffic from the countries that Chitika (and other ad networks) don’t support and to not monetize it is a pity. However…. What concerns me a little about these ads is that the announcement post says that it’s not just when someone from a non supported country visits your site but rather they say they serve them ‘when it makes sense’ to do so and give this example: Read more

Who Wants to Learn How to Make Web Videos That Sell?

April 30, 2008

Webvideo-UniversityI’m starting a new course this week (as a student) - it’s called WebVideo University. Over the past 6 or so so months I’ve been experimenting more and more with using Video on my blog. It started out with just an experiment or two but the response from readers was so encouraging that I set myself the goal of running weekly (or as it turned out every second week) video posts. Like I say - the response has been wonderful - there have been numerous benefits: Read more

How Much Traffic Should a Blog Have Before Running Advertising

April 27, 2008

Speed-Postingiamluc asks “How much traffic should you have to offer advertisements on your blog?” “When should you put advertising on your blog?” Funnily enough I’ve been asked this question four times in the last 24 hours so it’s probably a good time to answer it. Before I answer the question though - let me say that there are numerous approaches to this question and if you ask a variety of ‘pros’ you’ll get a similar variety of responses. Here’s how I do it: Read more

How to Build Your Blog’s Readership

April 25, 2008

Speed-Posting@jeremyjacks asks - How did you get to be a big blogger? And what should I do to get more site hits?” also - @JoshAnstey asks - “whats the best way to build blog exposure?” I’m not sure I’m famous outside of a very small segment of the internet - but the growth I’ve had on my blogs has come over a long period of time and I would say that one of the ’secrets’ to growing a blog readership is to stick at it and work hard for a sustained period of time. I’ve been blogging 5 and a half years now and have worked a lot of hours in that time. Outside of hard work (and a bit of luck) there are many techniques you can use to grow readership to a blog. I’ve summarised some of the many articles I’ve written on the topic here on my How to Find Readers for your Blog page. Also check out my 6 part series on How I’d Promote My Blog if I was Starting Out Again. I really believe that the topics covered in that of guest posting (on relevant blogs in your niche), networking, viral content, advertising and social media are a great place to start. Also - get on Twitter (I know you’re on it Jeremy and Josh but others should) because it’s a pretty hot spot at the moment when it comes on online activity and I think the potential to drive a lot of traffic from there is still only just being realized. It’s a space that is still in it’s early days of development so get in early (even though it’s been a year or two since it launched) and position yourself for the future. Read more
