When Google AdSense Doesn’t Provide Relevant Ads On a Blog

April 21, 2008

AdSense is a wonderful way to make money from blogs for many bloggers - however it’s not always suitable. Check out this post looking at the ads that AdSense put up on a blog for women over the age of 40. Ads included (to name just a few): MEET MARRIED WOMEN! Married but looking? Meet LOCAL married women right now! OLDER BLACK WOMEN: Free to join. 1000’s of pictures of beautiful older black singles. HISPANIC WOMEN ONLINE: Find your interracial match on line. MARRIED BUT LOOKING: Discreet affairs for men and women have never been easier. Read more

Six Apart Launch an Ad Network and New Services

April 21, 2008

SixapartTomorrow Six Apart will launch a new ad network, the acquisition of a social media agency and new ’services’. I’ve published the full press release below but tomorrow Six Apart are going public with some major developments. The main components of the announcements today: A New Ad Network - for ‘influential bloggers’ Six Apart will now offer a way to monetize their blogs. They’ve long been selling ads for their own services like Vox so it makes sense to extend this and do it for other ‘VIP’ blogs also. They’re doing so through a partnership with Adify on a revenue share basis with bloggers. Read more

Chitika Add Interactive Premium Listing Ads Into the Mix

April 16, 2008

Here’s a piece of news that slipped through without me noticing while I was traveling last month - Chitika have announce a program to serve ‘graphic ads’ in your Chitika ad units when they feel that a CPM would earn you more than a CPC ad. The announced it back in March here and here:
“This new graphic ads service has one goal: maximize your revenue. The Chitika ad on your page will display a relevant and targeted banner/graphic ad on your page only when it makes sense - when it will earn you more revenue. Graphic ads will pay per impression (CPM) and will be shown only when they can earn you more revenue than a CPC-based ad. Our ad targeting system will intelligently find and display relevant graphic (CPM) ads for your pages when appropriate.”

AdSense Introduce Reports for Link Units

April 15, 2008

I just logged into my AdSense account to check my nightly stats and found a new reporting option in the ‘Advance Reports’ section (pictured below). Now you can choose to view ‘Ad Units’ or ‘Link Units’ or ‘Both’. Ad Units are all of your normal ad units (text ads, image ads, video ads) and ‘Link Units’ are those little adlink unit ads that many bloggers use around their navigational areas that take readers to a second page of ads. it’s good to see these stats as they were previously all mixed into one in the advance reports unless you’d set them up in channels. Making Money as a Side Effect of Blogging (and a New Breed of Blogger)

April 14, 2008

Seth has some interesting things in response to the question - ‘How do I make a lot of money blogging?’ here.
“The best bloggers make money, but mostly as a side effect, not as a direct result of setting out to use a blog to make a profit. It’s just too long a ramp up time, too frustrating and too uncertain to be the best path to make a living.”
A few thoughts: Seth’s described my own experience of making money from blogging pretty well. I didn’t set out to do it at all. I blogged for a year before it even crossed my mind and even then it was initially an experiment (just like adding many blogging tools and features was for many of us in those days). Read more

Why Do You Write?

April 11, 2008

Why Do You Write? In this post Muhammad Saleem asks why do you write? Muhammad is a social media consultant and a top-ranked community member on many social sites. image by mezone

Why Do You Write?

Sounds like an odd question at first, doesn’t it? The reason why you write actually has a big impact on how you write and what you write about, and understand that identifying this reason can actually help you write better and work faster towards achieving that goal. For example, when I first started writing online, I was writing a personal diary of sorts. Since I was writing it more as an outlet for self-expression and not as something for public consumption, the blog didn’t look very pretty, it was unstructured, and I didn’t care much about editing the content or writing regularly. However, when I started writing my first social media blog, I approached the matter very differently. What changed? Read more

Exploring Shopzilla [Interview]

April 10, 2008

In February I posted a first impression review of the Shopzilla Publisher Program. Shopzilla This CPC (cost per click) ad unit is similar to those used successfully by many with the Chitika program. There’s one live in action at the bottom of this post. I’ve been getting some good feedback from quite a few ProBlogger readers who have tried the program and am consistently getting good results with them so I approached Shopzilla’s Senior Vice President of Operations and Business Development, David Weinrot, for an interview about the program. He kindly agreed. Here’s our chat about Shopzilla. Read more
