Link Tips: 20 April 2008

April 20, 2008

Some interesting links that I gathered this week (and a couple a bit older). A scam alert, web 2.0 generators, web metrics and podcasts, enjoy.
  • AdSense Secrets Scam Alert: You’ve probably read about Joel Comm’s AdSense Secrets ebook for $9.95 launch. Well, looks like there is a scam behind it, and Mark is calling it out.
  • 25 Web 2.0 Generators: Good list with 25 generators to create logos, badges, buttons, backgrounds and rounded corners.
  • Web Metrics 101: Even wondered about the meaning of hits, visits, unique visitors, bounce rate and similar? Check out this post then.
  • Podcast Interviews: Sometime ago I did two podcast interviews. One with Gobala Krishnam about StumbleUpon, and one with Mani Karthik about blogging. Be aware that my mic stinks, and my audio was terrible. I already ordered a decent one…
  • 9 Podcasting Tips: Speaking of podcasts, if you want to get started with one read this post from Performancing first.

The Fonts Paradise: dafont.com

April 18, 2008

So the other day I was talking with my designer about a logo, and he recommended me to go to dafont.com, choose one font, and report back to him. Believe it or not I had never came across this site before. dafont.png It is nothing less than the fonts paradise. They have over 7,000 fonts available for download, most in PC and MAC versions. You can search for fonts based on style (e.g., fancy, techno, gothic, basic) or even browse among the Top 100 fonts on their database. Overall it is a very useful website for anyway that needs to write on computers (which translates to all of us, I guess). Read more

7 Principles of Effective Icon Design

April 12, 2008

Before approaching icon design there are some guidelines and principles that are worth studying. If you want to create effective icon designs, then you should take a holistic approach to issues such as: audience, size, simplicity, lighting, perspective, and style. This article gives you a good starting place for creating icons that work well together and fit seamlessly within your designs.

1. Approach Icon Design Holistically

Icons fit within graphic systems. Whether they are designed for desktop applications or websites an icon is one of many graphic elements that need to work together harmonically. Carry this logic across icon sets as well. Icons can be appreciated for their esthetic solutions individually, but they don’t function alone. Evaluate your icon designs relative to the graphic system your using them in. Make sure that each icon differs from surrounding icons, while still working together as a whole. In the article Designing an iconic language over at Turbo Milk the author Yegor Gilyov states, “If you need to draw several icons, you need to think over images for the whole set of icons before proceeding with illustrating activities.” This is one of two major points made in this article on icon design. He goes on to explain how failing to plan how the whole set of icons will work together from the beginning will ensure a huge waste of time, as redesign will be inevitable. Read more

The Best Sources of Content for WordPress Users

April 9, 2008

wordpress.png WordPress is the most popular blogging platform, and I know many Daily Blog Tips readers use WordPress to power their own blogs. As a WordPress user, I enjoy reading about the platform and staying up-to-date with news from the WordPress community. The great thing about WordPress is the endless possibilities that it allows, and by reading from other users and designers there is plenty of information available on just about any topic you can think of. If you’re looking for technical documentation or support, the codex and forums are usually the first place to look. However, I would like to share some blogs and websites that provide a good amount of WP-related content that I think you will appreciate. Whether you are a theme designer/developer or a blogger who is looking to get more out of WordPress, visit some of these sites and see for yourself. What is the Deal with the WordPress Theme Viewer?

    April 2, 2008

I am a big fan of WordPress, there is no denying on that. When other companies and platforms attack it, I am among the first to defend it. That being said I also believe that we should be impartial with our opinions, and there is one issue that is bugging me for some time already: the WordPress Theme Viewer. wordpressthemeviewer.png The theme viewer is essentially a place where WordPress theme designers can upload their themes, and users can download themes. It is a feature-rich website, so you can filter your research with several parameters, leave comments, rate themes and so on. Read more
