Leverage Social And Media Secure Your Next Career Move

April 30, 2008

As you know I write a lot about the power of social media to help you build your reputation online. One of the case studies I share in my speaking about social media, personal branding and career success is of my good friend and mastermind buddy  Jessica Bowman who is an SEO expert. After relocating across the US, taking up a role at Yahoo, Jessica lost her role in the recent massive shakedown to everyone’s surprise in just 90 days after taking up her appointment. Jessica has a blog that is well regarded in her field of expertise and as she has been providing excellent advice and tips there, she is well known by key influencers in the world of SEO. This has led to her story and how she has successfully managed career transition since leaving Yahoo to be picked up by a major US glossy where she will be featured in their July edition (sorry can’t tell you who until she makes it public) and she is attracting great opportunities from consulting to speaking, all through her network both online an offline. Social Networking And How Peer Pressure Can Cause Security Issues

April 28, 2008

If you are not using a social networking tool, then most likely you feel pretty ancient right now. Just about everywhere we look these days, social networking sites envelope us. As a matter of fact they slowly choke us to death or at least that is how it feels with the burden of having to join this and that site. social networking If you don’t twitter, you are simply not cool these days. Alternatively, if you are not part of MySpace you are not in the loop. Stumblers are also a force to be reckoned with, especially for bloggers. But who says so anyway? Perhaps the millions of people who join these sites every month to converse with like minded people world wide. Or else the trend setters. Who knows, but what is clear is that social networking is robbing us of our time. Read more

Google Grants: Google Adword Grants For Not For Profits

April 26, 2008

At the iQ Bootcamp last week, in the Future Now Panel session that I took part in we shared the resource of Twitter. One of the questions always come up when people hear about Twitter (one of the currently popular micro blogging platforms)  is ‘what’s the purpose?’ closely followed by ‘isn’t it a waste of time’. Well here is an example of where following Twitter has resulted in a potentially huge opportunity for one of the not for profit organisations I work with and I hope will be of assistance for you too. Today I noticed a tweet (a message on Twitter) from Laura Fitton of Pistachio Consulting (you can find Laura at @Pistachio on Twitter). She sent a message that she was doing a live video stream using Qik and her mobile phone from PodCamp NYC. Read more

How to Build Your Blog’s Readership

April 25, 2008

Speed-Posting@jeremyjacks asks - How did you get to be a big blogger? And what should I do to get more site hits?” also - @JoshAnstey asks - “whats the best way to build blog exposure?” I’m not sure I’m famous outside of a very small segment of the internet - but the growth I’ve had on my blogs has come over a long period of time and I would say that one of the ’secrets’ to growing a blog readership is to stick at it and work hard for a sustained period of time. I’ve been blogging 5 and a half years now and have worked a lot of hours in that time. Outside of hard work (and a bit of luck) there are many techniques you can use to grow readership to a blog. I’ve summarised some of the many articles I’ve written on the topic here on my How to Find Readers for your Blog page. Also check out my 6 part series on How I’d Promote My Blog if I was Starting Out Again. I really believe that the topics covered in that of guest posting (on relevant blogs in your niche), networking, viral content, advertising and social media are a great place to start. Also - get on Twitter (I know you’re on it Jeremy and Josh but others should) because it’s a pretty hot spot at the moment when it comes on online activity and I think the potential to drive a lot of traffic from there is still only just being realized. It’s a space that is still in it’s early days of development so get in early (even though it’s been a year or two since it launched) and position yourself for the future. Read more

Social Media Study: Universal McCann Power To The People - Wave 3 Report

April 25, 2008

Are you looking for a current understanding of the scale of social media across the globe? Well look no further than the extensive study undertaken in March 2008 by Universal McCann - Power To The People - Wave3. The research covers input from 17,000 internet users across 29 countries and was undertaken to understand the rise in consumer generated content and how people are using social media. It is certainly the most extensive global report I have seen on the subject of social media adoption. Key notes from the Power To The People - Wave 3 report include the following statistics: Read more

FaceBook Chat Takes It To The Next Level

April 23, 2008

facebook-chat I logged into my FaceBook account today and noticed FaceBook has added a chat feature! In classic Facebook style, it has a clean & smooth interface and you can basically chat with any FaceBook member that happens to be online at the moment. With this, Facebook takes it to the next level and now it’s also an instant messenger, competing with established services like Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger and GTalk. With millions of users, this service will spread like wildfire and I’m sure a desktop FaceBook application is just around the corner. Read more

Six Apart Launch an Ad Network and New Services

April 21, 2008

SixapartTomorrow Six Apart will launch a new ad network, the acquisition of a social media agency and new ’services’. I’ve published the full press release below but tomorrow Six Apart are going public with some major developments. The main components of the announcements today: A New Ad Network - for ‘influential bloggers’ Six Apart will now offer a way to monetize their blogs. They’ve long been selling ads for their own services like Vox so it makes sense to extend this and do it for other ‘VIP’ blogs also. They’re doing so through a partnership with Adify on a revenue share basis with bloggers. Read more

5 Blogger Books I Would Buy Today

April 19, 2008

Recently it seems as if there have been a number of bloggers getting deals to publish books. Last week Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett announced the release of their upcoming book. A few weeks ago Andy Beal from Marketing Pilgrim also published Radically Transparent following the success of his blog. blooger books Personally, I like the idea of bloggers that I recognize publishing books. I just ordered Darren and Chris’s book and I’m confident that it will be worth the price, because I’m already familiar with them and I respect and trust their insight and opinions. As I was purchasing the book, it made me think about some other bloggers that I would like to write a book on a particular topic. Plenty of bloggers are selling informational products or giving away free ebooks, but there are a few specifics that I would like to see, and here they are: Read more
