What Time of the Day is Best to Post to Your Blog

April 28, 2008

Speed-PostingLeftTheBox asks “Hey Darren I know you post daily but do you try to post at a certain time each day?” I certainly do! I not only set myself minimum post numbers each day but I’ve taken it a little further and narrowed down some daily posting windows that I aim for. Really it comes down to a bit of research and experimentation to work out when the best time to post is (and I suspect it’ll vary from blog to blog depending upon where their audience is situation and even depending upon topic). For me I attempt to have a fresh post go up on my blog in the morning US time. Here at ProBlogger my audience is fairly global but the majority of readers are in the Americas so I attempt to have something fresh for them for when they get to work, check their feeds over a morning coffee etc. I then also attempt to post something for the end of the day (US time). Then on days that I post a 3rd post per day (it’s usually more of a ‘newsy’ post) I attempt to put that up about 8 hours after the 2nd one just so that posts are evenly spread through the day. From 10000 to 0 Emails in an Inbox in 24 Hours

April 9, 2008

Over the weekend I decided to get serious about my email situation. I’d been sitting on an inbox with close to 10,000 items in it for months and was feeling more and more stressed by the day. I posted on Twitter that I needed to do something about it and then decided to take action. Within 24 hours I had an inbox with no items in it (well momentarily) and have been able to maintain that ever since (OK, so it’s only three days, but it’s been a very busy three days). A number of people asked me to give an update on what I did - here’s a very quick summary (by the way - thanks to the many Twitter followers who offered advice):

I moved all my email activity to Gmail

12 Rules for Getting a Grip on Massive ProBlogger Email

March 31, 2008

This is a guest post from Leo Babauta of Zen Habits, a blog about simplicity and productivity. Darren has told us that his ProBlogger email inbox can often be overwhelming, and with a couple of extremely successful blogs, running a large ad network, and multiple other projects, it isn’t hard to imagine why. If most people have a hard time managing email, Darren would have the same problem but on a different order of magnitude. However, from my experiences at Zen Habits, with dozens of emails coming in all the time, I’ve found that getting a handle on email and keeping an empty inbox is definitely possible. I thought I’d share my advice for Darren as a way to illustrate smart email practices for bloggers and others with a lot of email. Read more

Core Principles for Rapidly Attaining Creative Flow

March 24, 2008

Consistently achieving a state of focused concentration can be difficult. There are some simple techniques you can employ that will have you rapidly entering this blissful creative and productive zone. Learn the benefits of Flow and how to get into that hyper productive groove.

Rapidly Attaining Creative Flow - Quick Overview

  1. Create your optimal environment for working on your creative projects. For me it’s my office, mine is like a cave, or a big closet. It’s as removed as possible. Situated in a far corner of my house. That way external distractions are minimized and I’m able to focus.
  2. Each day prioritize your tasks. Arrange them so that you have time to focus on the creative part of a project. Schedule this time of day during your peak performance hours. For me that’s in the morning. Fully commit to this time. Turn off your email, your phone, and your feeds. Don’t allow anything to break your concentration. Lock the door if you have to and turn on some music.
  3. Start creating. Fully enjoy this creative time and be in the moment. Allow yourself to ignore your internal needs. Let time and worries drift away from your conscious. Focus deeper and become completely absorbed in your work.
  4. Continue to push and challenge yourself in your work. If a problem presents itself that is to complex. Quickly break it down into manageable parts and keep working, keep flowing, and keep creating.
Kaboomb! A bomb just went off or you finished your work. Otherwise, nothing is pulling you out of this zone! Read more
